(Feature: “Looking back on 2025 news through English.” Naomi Trauden, how do you look back on this year?)
(Well, since this year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the war, I myself went to Hiroshima and conducted interviews, encountering many different words. But the reality is that there are still regions where war continues. It was a year where I felt again that we must keep our eyes firmly on this.)
(In that context, as part of an initiative by UNICEF, which works to protect the rights of children around the world, letters written by children from across the globe to adults on the theme of “what kind of world they want for 2050” have been published on their website.)
(What kind of messages are children appealing to adults? Ms. Trauden, could you introduce a few of them?)
(Yes. First, here is an excerpt from a letter written by 10-year-old Majd from the Gaza Strip, Palestine.)
1). I wish to live in a country where there are no wars and play with my friends and sleep without fear and see my relatives soon.
「戦争のない国で暮らして、そして友達と遊んで、そして怖がらずに眠って、そして早く親戚に会いたいです」
(Next, an excerpt from the letter of 11-year-old Rafif, also from the Gaza Strip.)
2). This message is for the adults in the world. This war has greatly affected us. I wish I could wake up and go to my school in a clean environment where I do not hear the sound of bombing or see destruction.
「これは世界のおとなたちへのメッセージです。この戦争は私たちに大きな影響を与えます。私は朝起きて爆発の音も破壊の光景もなくきれいな環境で毎日学校に行けたらいいのにと思います」
(And a message from 15-year-old Polina from Ukraine.)
3). I dream of a future where every child is safe, heard, and respected. I want a world where there is no war and every child can go to school, have friends, and live happily.
「私は、全ての子どもが安全で、自分の声を聞いてもらえて、尊重される未来を夢見ています。戦争のない世界で、みんなが学校に行って、友達と一緒にいて、幸せに生きられたらいいと思います」
(In addition to the messages introduced just now, the UNICEF website features messages from children in various countries such as Venezuela, Myanmar, and South Sudan.)
(There are many heartfelt and pure messages from children, so I think many will find them deeply moving.)
(Mr. Maeshima, how did you receive these messages from the children?)
(Well, they really sink in, don’t they? Being able to sleep without fear, not hearing the sound of explosions, being happy with friends—most places in Japan can do this now, but there are places that cannot. It’s a very different world. Imagining the scene now, I’m truly at a loss for words. That’s how I feel.)
(Ms. Iida, what about you?)
(Well, I was greatly shocked when I first saw the footage of children in war zones like Ukraine and Gaza. But honestly, I’ve become somewhat used to it, and listening to this now made me feel apologetic. I felt how precious it is to be at peace.)
(They really are the modest, perfectly natural wishes of children.)
(And of course, it’s not a war started by children. Children are bearing the brunt—the impact—of what adults started. They’ll likely live with this trauma in their hearts for decades, for the rest of their lives. I truly think all of us adults around the world need to consider how we take responsibility for that.)
(Indeed. We have listened to the messages sent from children in Gaza and Ukraine to the adults of the world.)

（飯田さんはいかがですか。）
（私は最初にウクライナやガザなどの戦地にいる子どもたちの映像を見たとき、大きな衝撃を受けました。でも正直、慣れてしまっていた自分がいて、今回あらためて聞いて申し訳ない気持ちになりました。平和であることがどれほど尊いかを実感しました。）
（これらは、子どもたちにとって本当にささやかで、ごく自然な願いですよね。）
（そして当然ながら、戦争を始めたのは子どもたちではありません。大人が始めたことの影響を、子どもたちが真正面から受けています。彼らはこの心の傷を、この先何十年も、人生の終わりまで抱えて生きていくかもしれません。世界中の大人すべてが、その責任をどう引き受けるのかを考える必要があると、私は強く思います。）
