Demonstrators took to the streets in cities across the United States on Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of President Donald Trump’s second inauguration. They protested against his administration’s immigration and foreign policy.
Trump began the second year of his second term in office on Tuesday.
In Los Angeles, participants called on the government not to detain people without due process on the pretext of preventing illegal immigration. The city has many immigrants from Central and South America.
A 26-year-old Mexican-American man said he is frustrated and saddened by how his people are being affected.
He said that if Trump actually cares about his country, he needs to change “his entire agenda on immigrants.”
A 54-year-old woman said she does not think people can “survive another three years of this.” She said they need to do everything they can “to get him out now.”
In the US capital of Washington, a participant said, “The American people want Congress to show us you have some backbone.” Supporters responded that they have the power to change society.
A local woman who took part in the rally said many presidents have used foreign policy as a means to make the world a safer place, but that what they see now is a government that seeks to create conflict.
Demonstrations were also held in front of Trump Tower in New York. One participant described the past year as confusing, chaotic, depressing, repressing and oppressive. She said this isn’t the America that she wants.
