Macron announces plans to increase France’s nuclear warheads

French President Emmanuel Macron has said his country will increase its number of nuclear warheads in response to rising security threats.
Macron delivered a speech at a nuclear submarine base of the French Navy on Monday, speaking about nuclear strategy.
He announced the decision, saying security threats are increasing in the international community. As an example, he cited development of new nuclear weapons by Russia, which is continuing its invasion of Ukraine.
An assessment by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute shows France had a stockpile of 290 nuclear warheads in 2025, the world’s fourth largest number in the year.
Macron maintained that he will not disclose the number of nuclear warheads his country has or plans to have.
After the Cold War ended, France reduced its nuclear arsenal as it reviewed its nuclear strategy. Macron’s announcement means a policy shift to seeking stronger nuclear capabilities for his country.
Macron also said France is advancing talks with eight countries, including Germany, Britain and Poland, about a plan to expand its nuclear deterrence to Europe. The idea includes joint exercises and deploying air forces to countries around France.
Macron said a new era calls for a new approach, and that the next half-century will be an age of nuclear weapons, stressing the need for the build-up of stronger nuclear deterrence.
