Traditional Japanese washi paper is playing an indispensable role in the major restoration work that is being done on Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo’s painting, “The Last Judgment.”
The masterpiece is a gigantic fresco that adorns the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. It is about 13 meters wide and around 12 meters high. The Sistine Chapel is the venue for the conclave, a secret meeting that is held to appoint a new Roman Catholic pope.
Efforts have been underway since last month to remove dirt that has accumulated on the surface of the fresco. The major restoration work is being done for the first time in about 30 years.
Scaffolding has been set up at the site, and cover sheets with large printed images of the artwork have been draped over the scaffolding.
The careful restoration work is being done behind the scaffolding and cover sheets. Workers soak pieces of washi paper in water and then use them to remove filthy substances from the surface of the fresco.
Washi paper is soft and highly absorbent. It is said to be a material that can effectively wipe off dirt without damaging paintings.
The chapel remains open to the public, even though the restoration work is being done. But a woman from the United States said she was a little disappointed because she did not know that the restoration work was underway.
The vivid colors of the fresco will be visible again, when the restoration work is finished in April.
