Japan’s health ministry approves iPS cell products for first practical use

Japan’s health ministry has announced formal approval for the domestic manufacture and sale of two products for the treatment of heart disease and Parkinson’s disease using iPS cells. It means such treatments will be put to practical use for the first time in the world.
One of the products subject to Friday’s announcement is cardiomyocyte sheet ReHeart. It was developed by University of Osaka startup Cuorips to treat ischemic cardiomyopathy, a serious heart disease.
The other is AMCHEPRY, a cell product for transplantation into the brains of patients with Parkinson’s. The disease causes symptoms such as tremors in the limbs. Sumitomo Pharma, headquartered in Osaka, previously submitted an application.
It is possible that patients will be able to receive treatment under medical insurance coverage as early as this summer if a production system is put in place and medical institutions can get ready.
The approval comes with conditions that include a survey of all patients within seven years to further verify efficacy and safety of the treatments.
Health Minister Ueno Kenichiro said after a Cabinet meeting on Friday that he hopes patients in Japan and throughout the world will be helped. He added that the necessary procedures will be moved forward so the treatments can quickly reach all patients.

日本の厚生労働省は、iPS細胞を用いた心臓病とパーキンソン病の治療のための2つの製品について、国内での製造と販売を正式に承認したと発表した。これは、こうした治療が世界で初めて実用化されることを意味する。
金曜日の発表の対象となった製品の1つは、心筋細胞シート「ReHeart」である。これは大阪大学発のスタートアップ企業クオリプスが、重い心臓病である虚血性心筋症を治療するために開発した。
もう1つは「AMCHEPRY」で、パーキンソン病患者の脳に移植する細胞製品である。この病気は手足の震えなどの症状を引き起こす。大阪に本社を置く住友ファーマが以前に申請を提出していた。
生産体制が整い、医療機関の準備が整えば、早ければ今年の夏にも患者が医療保険の適用のもとで治療を受けられる可能性がある。
今回の承認には、治療の有効性と安全性をさらに確認するため、7年以内にすべての患者を対象とした調査を行うことなどの条件が付けられている。
上野健一郎厚生労働大臣は金曜日の閣議後、これらの治療によって日本だけでなく世界中の患者が助けられることを期待していると述べた。また、治療がすべての患者に早く届くよう、必要な手続きを進めていくと付け加えた。
