Cuba says it is open to dialog with US

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has said that the country is open to dialog on any topic as US President Donald Trump takes steps to restrict oil supplies to the island.
Diaz-Canel said in a news conference on Thursday that such discussions must take place without pressure.
He added that the oil restrictions affect public transportation, schools, the economy and other areas. He asked, “How do we till our soil? How do we move around? How do we keep our kids in classes without fuel?”
Trump signed an executive order last week to impose additional tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba. Trump also suggested US military operations in Venezuela in January will stop the country’s oil exports to Cuba.
Observers say Cuba could run out of oil stockpiles this month. The country has been struggling to maintain electricity supplies amid a fuel shortage.
On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over the humanitarian situation in Cuba.
Last week, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said stopping oil shipments to Cuba could trigger a humanitarian crisis on the Caribbean island. Mexico is one oil provider to Cuba.
US White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday that Cuba “is about to collapse” and its government “should be wise in their statements directed towards the President at the United States.”
She said, “The President is always willing to engage in diplomacy, and I believe that’s something that is taking place, in fact, with the Cuban government.”
