Rio Carnival parades begin, with some controversy

The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is in full swing, with parades featuring top samba teams. But one of the events is stirring up political controversy.
The parades that started on Sunday night feature Rio’s top 12 samba schools, each with roughly 3,000 members. Dancers parade down a 700-meter stretch of a street along with gigantic decorated floats.
This year, many teams designed their performances around prominent figures in a variety of fields.
The parade by the first school to perform centered on Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
It depicts his climb from being a worker to taking office.
A member of the school said being part of a story of honoring the great Brazilian is delightful and rewarding.
The left-wing Lula is set to run in the country’s presidential race later this year. Right-wing critics have called the parade campaigning ahead of the official campaign period.
The parades will continue through Wednesday morning.
