Trump imposes new tariffs after Supreme Court rules against earlier levies

US President Donald Trump has imposed new import tariffs following a Supreme Court ruling against levies he had introduced under an emergency law.
Last week, the top court ruled that Trump had exceeded his authority when he invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, to impose the levies, including what he calls “reciprocal tariffs.”
The Trump administration stopped collecting the levies under IEEPA at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday. At the same time, it imposed a new 10-percent global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act, which allows such measures to remain in place for 150 days.
Trump said in a social media post on Saturday that he would raise the new tariff to 15 percent. Government documents do not say when the increase will take effect.
The administration plans to keep the new tariff in place. It has also ordered the Office of the US Trade Representative to look into possible unfair trade practices by other countries. It is also considering further action under Section 301 of the Trade Act, which allows the government to take retaliatory measures against unfair trade practices.
