Trump slaps 24% tariffs on Japan

US President Donald Trump has announced a new round of sweeping tariffs. He said a minimum baseline levy of 10 percent will be imposed on imports from all countries starting Saturday, and so-called reciprocal tariffs will be even higher. A White House official said the latter tariffs will take effect April 9.
Trump made the announcement on Wednesday at an event at the White House called “Make America Wealthy Again.”
Trump said: “I will sign a historical executive order instituting reciprocal tariffs on countries throughout the world, reciprocal. That means they do it to us and we do it to them. Very simple.”
The levies on China are set at 34 percent, and those for India at 26. Japan faces a 24 percent tariff, and the rate on goods from the European Union will be 20 percent.
At the event, Trump held up a list showing the tariffs that each country imposes on the US alongside the new levies the US will charge them. However, it is unclear how the administration calculated the figures for America’s trading partners.

アメリカのドナルド・トランプ大統領は、新たな大規模関税措置を発表しました。すべての国からの輸入品に対して、最低10％の基本関税が土曜日から課され、いわゆる「相互関税（報復関税）」はさらに高くなるとのことです。ホワイトハウスの当局者によると、後者の関税は4月9日から施行される予定です。
