‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’ shatters North America box office record

An animated movie based on the Japanese manga series “Kimetsu no Yaiba,” or “Demon Slayer” in English, has topped the North American charts in a record-breaking opening weekend.
Box office data show the film, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — Infinity Castle,” grossed an estimated 70 million dollars in the first three days since its release in the United States and Canada last Friday.
US media outlets say the movie has set a record for the biggest opening weekend gross for a Japanese animated film in North America.
It shattered the previous record set by “Pokemon: The First Movie — Mewtwo Strikes Back” in 1999, which took 31 million dollars.
Bloomberg says the movie’s strong opening “underscores the surging global appeal of anime.”
“Demon Slayer” is based on a hit manga series about a boy who battles demons in Japan about a century ago.
The latest movie is the first in a planned trilogy. It has also become a smash hit in Japan, where it was released in July.
