Harvard sues Trump administration over federal funding freeze

Harvard University has filed a lawsuit in the US to try to stop the administration of President Donald Trump from implementing a partial freeze on the institution’s federal funds.
The administration announced that it was freezing billions of dollars in federal assistance last week, after the university rejected the conditions that were attached to the funds.
One condition required the institution to strongly enforce rules regarding student behavior. The government cited the university’s response to alleged “antisemitism” on campus as a justification for its demands.
Harvard filed the suit at a federal court in Massachusetts on Monday. It accused the administration of using the funding as “leverage to gain control of academic decision-making.” It also called the freeze “unlawful and beyond the government’s authority.”
Harvard’s president said in a statement that the government’s actions have “stark real-life consequences for patients, students, faculty, staff, researchers, and the standing of American higher education in the world.”
The New York Times says the lawsuit signals “a major escalation of the ongoing fight between higher education and President Trump who has vowed to ‘reclaim’ elite universities.”
