Japan’s new Prime Minister Takaichi delivers her first policy speech

Japan’s new prime minister, Takaichi Sanae, delivered her first policy speech at the Diet on Friday afternoon, saying she will make tackling rising prices her top priority while also strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.
At the start of her speech, Takaichi expressed her determination to turn people’s anxieties about their present and future into hope and to build a strong economy. She said she will face the challenges confronting the world and restore Japan’s diplomacy so it can once again bloom at the heart of the international community. She also pledged to work resolutely for the sake of the nation and its people.
She said she will consider policy proposals from other parties and discuss them flexibly and sincerely, as long as they do not conflict with the government’s basic policies.
Takaichi described tackling rising prices as the Cabinet’s top priority. She said it will swiftly draw up a set of economic measures and submit a draft supplementary budget to fund them. She added that she aims to have a bill abolishing the provisional gasoline tax rate enacted during the current Diet session.
As for raising the income tax threshold, the prime minister said the government will discuss further measures.
She also announced the establishment of a growth strategy council to promote strong growth in the Japanese economy.
As for foreign and national security policy, Takaichi expressed deep concern over the military activities of China, North Korea and Russia. She said the alliance between Japan and the United States is the cornerstone of Japan’s diplomacy and security policy. She added that she hopes to build a personal relationship of trust with US President Donald Trump and further elevate bilateral ties.
Takaichi also referred to Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea, expressing her intention to use whatever means possible to allow their return as soon as possible.
She said she aims to fundamentally strengthen Japan’s defense capabilities. She said the government will begin reviewing three national security documents, including the National Security Strategy, with the goal of revising them by the end of next year. She added that the government will speed up its plan to raise defense spending and related expenditures to 2 percent of GDP. She says she will take some measures this fiscal year, including using the supplementary budget.
