Trump meets Central Asian leaders amid push for critical minerals

US President Donald Trump is trying to strengthen ties with countries that are rich in natural resources, especially rare earths. He welcomed the leaders of five Central Asian nations, including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, to the White House on Thursday.
Trump said: “One of the key items on our agenda is critical minerals. In recent weeks, my administration has strengthened American economic security by forging agreements with allies and friends across the world to broaden our critical-mineral supply chains.”
China holds an overwhelming share of the resources, and Trump is aiming to secure supplies without relying on the country.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick posted on social media that he signed a memorandum with his counterpart from Kazakhstan. He wrote that it will deepen collaboration on “the minerals that power innovation.”
The US and China are at odds over rare earths, which was one topic of discussion when Trump met Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea last month.
Chinese commerce ministry officials had announced stricter export controls on the minerals. However, they said on Friday that they are suspending those measures until next November. That follows an agreement reached at the summit.
