France’s Le Pen calls her conviction ‘witch hunt’ at rally in Paris

France’s far-right politician Marine Le Pen has denounced a court ruling banning her from standing for office as a “witch hunt.”
She made the remark at a rally held by the National Rally party in Paris on Sunday. The party’s president Jordan Bardella and a large crowd of supporters gathered at the event.
Le Pen is widely viewed as the front-runner for the 2027 presidential election.
A court in Paris last month gave Le Pen, the former head of the far-right party, a five-year ban on running for public office.
She was convicted of embezzling public funds, which were intended for parliamentary assistants, to finance her party’s activities.
She has been barred from standing for the presidency unless the ruling is overturned by an appeals court.
At the rally, Le Pen said the court decision was made not in accordance with the law but politically motivated. She added that her verdict was not justice but a witch hunt.
Supporters expressed solidarity with Le Pen by waving French national flags and banners reading “President Marine Le Pen.”
A 17-year-old woman said Le Pen is leading in polls for the presidential election, but she has been prevented from running. She described it as a denial of democracy.
A counter-rally was also held in Paris on the same day. It was organized by leftist and other parties which support Le Pen’s conviction.

フランスの極右政治家マリーヌ・ル・ペン氏は、政治活動を禁じられた裁判所の判決について「魔女狩り」だと非難しました。
ル・ペン氏は日曜日、パリで開かれた国民連合党の集会でこの発言をしました。党首のジョルダン・バルデラ氏と多くの支持者たちがこのイベントに集まりました。
ル・ペン氏は2027年の大統領選挙で最有力候補と見なされています。
パリの裁判所は先月、極右政党の元党首であるル・ペン氏に対し、公職への立候補を5年間禁止する判決を下しました。
彼女は、議会補佐官のために使われるはずの公金を着服した罪で有罪判決を受けました。この判決が控訴裁で覆されない限り、大統領選への立候補は認められません。
ル・ペン氏は集会で、「この判決は法律に基づいたものではなく、政治的動機によるものだ」と述べ、「これは正義ではなく魔女狩りだ」と付け加えました。
支持者たちはフランス国旗や「マリーヌ・ル・ペン大統領」と書かれた横断幕を掲げて連帯を表しました。
17歳の女性は、「ル・ペン氏は世論調査でトップなのに、立候補が阻まれている。これは民主主義の否定だ」と語りました。
同日、パリでは左派政党などによる対抗集会も開催され、ル・ペン氏の有罪判決を支持する声が上がりました。
