S.Korean prosecutors ponder more charges against ousted President Yoon

South Korean media say authorities will likely step up their investigation of allegations against former President Yoon Suk-yeol, now that he has been ousted from power.
The country’s Constitutional Court upheld Yoon’s impeachment on Friday for briefly imposing martial law in December. The ruling removed Yoon from office.
In central Seoul, people who support the court decision, and those against it, held separate large-scale rallies on Saturday.
Yoon has not appeared in public. He is believed to have been staying at the presidential residence and plans to move back to his home in Seoul with his wife, Kim Keon-hee.
Some South Korean media outlets are reporting the former president is looking for a new residence.
Since he was ousted from office, Yoon is no longer entitled to receive preferential treatments as a former president.
In principle, a South Korean president has the privilege of immunity from criminal charges while in office, but insurrection is an exception.
Yoon is suspected of abusing his power as president by declaring martial law.
Prosecutors are reportedly investigating allegations that Yoon and his wife meddled in candidate nominations by the ruling People Power Party for the 2024 general elections.
In January, prosecutors indicted Yoon on the charge of leading an insurrection with his short-lived imposition of martial law.
Media reports say he may face other charges.

韓国メディアによると、当局はユン・ソクヨル前大統領に対する疑惑の捜査を強化する見通しです。彼はすでに権力を失いました。
同国の憲法裁判所は、昨年12月に一時的に戒厳令を発動したことを理由に、金曜日にユン氏の弾劾を認めました。この判決により、ユン氏は大統領職を失いました。
ソウル中心部では、裁判所の決定を支持する人々と、それに反対する人々が、土曜日に別々に大規模な集会を開きました。
ユン氏は公の場に姿を見せておらず、大統領公邸に滞在していると見られています。今後、妻のキム・ゴンヒ氏とともにソウルの自宅に戻る予定です。
