A home improvement store in Japan’s Kushiro City says its inventory of fans and air conditioners has sold out due to record temperatures. The city, which is in the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido, is known for its cool summers.
Kushiro’s highest average temperature in summer is usually around 20 degrees Celsius. This year, the city has been sweltering under record heat, with the mercury topping 30 degrees for three straight days from July 23 to July 25.
When the store opened on July 23, it had 130 fans and 70 air conditioners and spot coolers in stock, but they were sold out in four days.
With no more such products to fill the shelves, the store has no choice but to stock heating equipment instead.
Assistant store manager Koiwa Masahiro says August may also be very hot, and that he wants to offer air conditioners and other products to customers in need as soon as possible.
The store says fans it additionally ordered last week had also been sold out by Sunday.
