Ports in Japan struggling to handle big hauls of Pacific saury

A fishing port in Japan’s northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido is enjoying big catches of Pacific saury this season. But poor hauls in recent years have made it difficult for fishers to handle the unexpected large volume.
Pacific saury, or Sanma in Japanese, is widely loved in Japan as a taste of autumn.
Hanasaki Port in Nemuro City has boasted the country’s largest saury landings for 15 consecutive years. The saury season opened on August 10.
The catches until the end of August amounted to 4,540 tons, more than double the same period last year. A big haul is continuing this month, with the volume for 12 days through Friday far exceeding August’s catch at 6,395 tons.
However, a local fisheries cooperative is struggling to handle consecutive days of large hauls, as it has reduced operations due to poor saury catches in recent years.
The national saury fishery cooperative association says the country’s catch of Pacific saury had surpassed 200,000 tons almost every year until 2014, but plunged to 18,000 tons in 2022.
Local officials say there are shortages of tanks and crushed ice, and that they are having difficulty securing trucks to transport the fish to markets and seafood processing facilities.
The number of fishery companies capable of handling large amounts of saury is also decreasing.
A seafood processing firm in Nemuro used to annually buy around 7,000 tons of saury, but it has switched to mackerel and other types of fish due to the prolonged poor saury catch.
The firm has also reduced the number of wooden boxes used for shipping saury, and is now using cardboard boxes after the wooden cases ran out early this month.
The firm’s president, Hamaya Takao, said a big catch is good, but he has no idea what saury landings will be like in the years to come. He said he is facing challenges as his firm cannot expand its capacity.
Other ports as well are unable to handle the large haul.
The national saury fishery cooperative association began to limit operations nationwide from September 4 to adjust the fishing yield. It says it has imposed the restrictions for the first time since 2012, and plans to continue until the end of this month.

北海道の最北の漁港では、今シーズン、サンマの漁獲量が多く、漁師たちはその大漁を楽しんでいます。しかし、近年の漁獲量の低迷により、予想外の大量水揚げに対応するのが難しくなっています。
サンマ（英語では Pacific saury、また日本語では「サンマ」）は、秋の味覚として日本で広く愛されています。
根室市の花咲港は、15年連続で国内最大のサンマ水揚げ量を誇っています。今シーズンの漁期は8月10日に始まりました。
8月末までの漁獲量は4,540トンに達し、前年同時期の2倍以上でした。今月も大漁が続き、12日間で6,395トンと、8月の漁獲量を大きく上回りました。
しかし、地元の漁業協同組合は、連日の大量水揚げに対応するのに苦戦しています。近年のサンマ不漁の影響で操業が縮小されているためです。
全国のサンマ漁業協同組合によると、2014年までは毎年20万トン以上の漁獲があったものの、2022年には1万8,000トンに急落しました。
地元の関係者によると、漁獲物を運ぶためのタンクや砕氷が不足しており、市場や水産加工施設への運搬用トラックの確保にも苦労しています。
大量のサンマを扱える漁業会社の数も減少しています。根室の水産加工会社は、かつて年間約7,000トンのサンマを購入していましたが、長期的不漁のためサバなど他の魚種に切り替えました。
また、この会社では、サンマ輸送用の木箱の数を減らし、今月初めには木箱が不足したため段ボール箱を使用しています。
同社社長の濱谷孝氏は「大漁は喜ばしいことだが、今後のサンマ水揚げがどうなるかは分からない」と述べ、会社の収容能力を拡大できないことが課題であるとしています。
他の港でも、大量水揚げに対応できない状況です。
全国サンマ漁業協同組合は、漁獲量調整のため9月4日から全国的に操業制限を始めました。2012年以来初の措置であり、今月末まで続ける予定です。
