Professional sumo wrestlers from Japan competing in the sport’s first overseas tour in 20 years have been given an enthusiastic welcome by fans in London.
The five-day Grand Sumo Tournament kicked off on Wednesday at the Royal Albert Hall. It is the first sumo tournament to be hosted in London in 34 years.
The two Yokozuna grand champions, Hoshoryu and Onosato, won the final bouts on the opening day.
Onosato said this is his first overseas tour, and he thinks it will be a good experience. He said he is happy to have received big cheers from the crowd, including when he performed the foot-stomping ritual called “shiko.”
He said he hopes the tour will make sumo even more popular and that many people will come to see it at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan arena.
A woman from London who brought her family said she is happy to have experienced the first day and she felt honored to see the two Yokozuna bouts.
She said it is a good mix of British and Japanese traditions, and the space is used very well.
A man who came with his wife from the United States said this is the first time they have seen sumo and it was a lot of fun. He said it was cool to see the athleticism of the wrestlers and the tradition behind the ceremonies.
The London tournament will continue through Sunday.
Another overseas Grand Sumo tour is scheduled for June next year in Paris.
