Locals disguised as the seven deities of good fortune visited homes to pray for good harvests and good health in the western Japanese prefecture of Saga on Sunday.
The traditional event in the Ane District of Kanzaki City dates back more than three centuries.
Members of a local group dedicated to preserving the event dressed up as the gods.
In the district, three of the seven gods — Jurojin, Fukurokuju, and Benzaiten –are replaced every year by a “grandpa,” a “grandma,” and a “daughter-in-law.”
They chanted messages of luck as they walked around the community.
The seven also stopped by the meeting hall of a municipal housing complex, as they wanted to stir the interest of new residents.
They sang Noh chants of good fortune and uttered prayers in exchange for food and drinks from the residents.
A male resident said it was a good experience for the people at the housing complex. He also said it is wonderful that the tradition has been passed down for more than 300 years.
A 20-year-old man who played one of the gods for the first time said the work was refreshing and fun. He noted that he attaches importance to traditions.
Members of the preservation group say they hope to keep the tradition alive.
