Opposition lawmaker mistakenly voted for LDP’s Takaichi in Japan PM poll

TOKYO — Results of the Oct. 21 prime ministerial selection vote in the House of Councillors have revealed that Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) member Sayaka Kobayashi accidentally voted for Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Sanae Takaichi.
A former reporter with public broadcaster NHK, Kobayashi was first elected as a member of the House of Councillors in July this year. She voted for the DPFP leader, Yuichiro Tamaki, in the first round. In the event of a runoff election, DPFP lawmakers had agreed to vote for Tamaki again, which would result in invalid ballots. Kobayashi, however, voted for Takaichi in the runoff between Takaichi and Yoshihiko Noda, leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan.
When interviewed by the Mainichi Shimbun, Kobayashi explained that she had not expected the runoff ballot’s format, saying, “I convinced myself that I had to choose between the two options and slipped up.” She revealed that she received a stern warning from senior party members about her mistake, then declared, “I want to approach future parliamentary activities with renewed focus, thoroughly ensuring things go properly, including procedures.”
DPFP leader Tamaki told reporters the same evening, “She’s admitted her mistake to me. To ensure such things don’t happen again, I intend to be more thorough with my guidance.”

10月21日に行われた参議院での首相指名選挙の結果、
国民民主党（DPFP）の小林沙耶香議員が、誤って自由民主党（LDP）党首・高市早苗氏に投票していたことが明らかになった。
小林氏は、元NHK記者で、今年7月に初めて参議院議員に当選した。
第1回投票では国民民主党代表の玉木雄一郎氏に投票。
決選投票では、国民民主党議員は再び玉木氏に投票し、無効票とすることで一致していた。
しかし小林氏は、高市早苗氏と立憲民主党の野田佳彦氏の間で行われた決選投票で、誤って高市氏に投票した。
毎日新聞の取材に対し、小林氏は
「決選投票用紙の形式を想定しておらず、2つの選択肢のどちらかを選ばなければならないと思い込んでしまった」と説明。
また、「党の上層部から厳重注意を受けた」と明かし、
「今後の議会活動では新たな気持ちで臨み、手続きも含めて物事をきちんと進めていきたい」と述べた。
玉木代表は同日夜、記者団に対して
「本人からミスを認める報告を受けた。再発防止のため、今後はより丁寧に指導を行いたい」と語った。
