英語からみる2025年ニュースこの1年

As the turbulent year of 2025 draws to a close, we will look back at the news of the past year from the perspective of English. We will introduce remarks and expressions sent out in English from around the world and delve into the backgrounds and intentions of words that cannot be understood through Japanese alone.
Ms. Trauden, you are active as a model, actress, and MC for “Contemporary English through News” on R2 Radio 2, right?
Yes, that’s right. Learning from the teachers every week, looking at world news in English brings in a completely different perspective, and it’s very educational.

It’s a pleasure to be here.
First, let’s look back from January at the main events of the year along with impressive English phrases. Some of the English readings are by translator Tom Kain.
#-NEWS TIMELINE 2025
On January 20th, the presidential inauguration was held at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President. This is from his speech.
- The golden age of America begins right now.

On April 2nd, President Trump gave a speech at the White House and announced reciprocal tariffs to raise U.S. tariffs based on the tariff rates of trading partners.
- I will sign a historic executive order instituting reciprocal tariffs on countries throughout the world.

Meanwhile, in Japan, the opening ceremony of the Osaka-Kansai Expo was held on April 12th.

「未来社会の実験場 大阪・関西万博へようこそ」
Over 25 million people visited the Osaka-Kansai Expo, in which 158 countries and regions participated, during its six-month run until October.
In October, Israel and Hamas, who had been fighting, agreed to the first stage of a reconciliation plan. British Prime Minister Starmer reportedly welcomed it, saying:
- This is a moment of profound relief that will be felt around the world.

And on December 11th, the Nobel Prize award ceremony was held in Sweden. Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi of Osaka University, winner of the Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and Dr. Susumu Kitagawa of Kyoto University, winner of the Prize in Chemistry, received their medals and diplomas from the King of Sweden.
- This is a truly great achievement for the benefit of humankind.
