Police with hunting rifles ready to cull bears in northeast Japan

Japanese police squads armed with rifles have begun a campaign to cull bears that appear in populated areas of northeastern Japan.
Ceremonies to mark the start of the mission were held on Thursday in Akita and Iwate prefectures.
Riot police personnel trained to use firearms to deal with terrorists have been sent there from other prefectures to work with local police.
At the Akita Prefectural Police headquarters, the police chief described the squad as being in the frontline of the response to bears, and asked the officers to make safeguarding people’s way of life its top priority.
The squad members then got into police vehicles for patrol duty.
The National Public Safety Commission’s rules on the use of firearms have been partially revised to allow police officers to use rifles to shoot bears that pose a threat to humans.
The head of the Iwate Prefectural Police visited the prefectural government office on Thursday and briefed Deputy Governor Yaegashi Koji on the police response.
At the closed-door meeting, the police chief reportedly explained that the police will only use rifles to complement the emergency use of firearms authorized by municipalities, and that safety will be their priority.
The police chief said they will cooperate with the prefectural and municipal governments, as well as hunters’ groups, to fulfill their responsibility to maintain public order.

木曜日、東北地方の人里に現れる熊を捕殺するため、ライフルを装備した警察部隊が作戦を開始した。
