Pope Francis mourned in funeral mass

Pope Francis has been laid to rest after a solemn funeral. Followers, world leaders and foreign dignitaries gathered at the Vatican to bid him a final farewell.
The Pontiff’s funeral mass started Saturday morning at St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican says over 250,000 mourners converged on and around the area. It says about 160 foreign delegations, including heads of state, attended the funeral.
World leaders including US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron offered their prayers in front of the Pope’s coffin before appearing at the square. Japan was represented by Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi.
After the mass, the Pope’s body was taken to his final resting place. Many people paid their respects on the roadside. The pontiff was laid to rest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome in accordance with his will. That’s unlike many of his predecessors who were buried at St. Peter’s Basilica.
The Pope asked that his tomb be “simple.” Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis appealed for the resolution of global conflicts through dialogue. Even on the day before his death, he called for a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine.
Trump, Zelenskyy meet before Pope’s funeral
The White House says Trump and Zelenskyy met on the sidelines of the funeral. Both US and Ukrainian officials described the meeting as “very productive.” Ukraine’s presidential office said the exchange lasted about 15 minutes and the leaders agreed to meet again. The two had last gathered at the White House in February in an event that ended in a heated argument.
Officials with the French presidential office say President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined the meeting, which was positive.

厳粛な葬儀の後、フランシスコ教皇は埋葬された。信者や各国の首脳、外国の要人が、最後の別れを告げるためにバチカンに集まった。
教皇の葬儀ミサは土曜日の朝、サン・ピエトロ広場で始まった。バチカンによると、25万人以上の弔問者がその周辺に集まった。また、約160の外国代表団（国家元首を含む）が参列した。
