One week since major quake in Myanmar, survivors in harsh conditions

Friday marks one week since a huge earthquake struck central Myanmar. The death toll has surpassed 3,100, and survivors are enduring harsh living conditions.
The magnitude 7.7 quake occurred on March 28, causing damage across a wide swathe of the country, including the capital of Naypyitaw and the second largest city of Mandalay.
The military says the disaster has left 3,145 people dead and 4,589 others injured. It also says 221 remain unaccounted for.
Relief supplies, such as food, water and medicines, have not reached all those in need, while many of the injured remain untreated as hospitals have collapsed. Many survivors have been living outdoors as their homes have been damaged or destroyed.
A Japanese medical team arrived in Mandalay on Thursday, where relief squads from China, India and other countries were operating. It plans to start providing medical aid for injured people and others at a makeshift clinic from Friday.
Myanmar’s military has been fighting against pro-democracy forces and ethnic minority groups since it grabbed power in a 2021 coup.
The quake is believed to have caused extensive damage to areas under the control of pro-democracy forces because of their proximity to the epicenter. But the extent of the damage remains unclear.
A person related to pro-democracy forces told NHK that some vehicles loaded with relief supplies were unable to reach their destinations as they were denied permission to pass through military-controlled areas.
The National Unity Government, which was launched by pro-democracy forces, said it would stop fighting in disaster-hit areas for two weeks starting on March 30. The military on Wednesday also declared a temporary ceasefire that it said would last until April 22.
However, it remains to be seen whether quake survivors can access humanitarian assistance as fighting has reportedly been continuing in some areas.

ミャンマーの大地震から1週間、生存者は過酷な状況に

金曜日で、ミャンマー中部を襲った大地震からちょうど1週間になります。死亡者数は3,100人を超え、生存者たちは厳しい生活環境に耐えています。
マグニチュード7.7の地震は3月28日に発生し、ネピドー（首都）や第二の都市マンダレーを含む広範囲で被害をもたらしました。
軍の発表によると、この災害により3,145人が死亡し、4,589人が負傷したとのことです。また、221人が行方不明となっています。
食料、水、医薬品といった救援物資は必要とするすべての人に届いておらず、多くの負傷者は病院の崩壊によって治療を受けられていません。多くの生存者が、損壊または全壊した家の代わりに屋外で生活しています。
木曜日、日本の医療チームがマンダレーに到着し、中国やインドなどの救援部隊とともに活動を開始しました。このチームは金曜日から仮設診療所で負傷者などへの医療支援を始める予定です。
ミャンマーでは2021年のクーデター以降、軍が民主化勢力や少数民族グループと戦闘を続けています。
震源地に近いため、民主化勢力の支配地域でも甚大な被害が出たと考えられていますが、その全容はいまだ明らかではありません。
民主化勢力に関係する人物がNHKに語ったところによると、救援物資を積んだ一部の車両が軍の支配地域を通る許可を得られず、目的地に到達できなかったということです。
民主化勢力によって設立された「国民統一政府（NUG）」は、3月30日から2週間、被災地での戦闘を停止すると発表しました。軍も水曜日に、4月22日までの一時停戦を宣言しました。
しかし、一部地域では戦闘が続いていると報告されており、地震の生存者が人道的支援を受けられるかどうかは、依然として不透明です。
