Marine Le Pen slams court ruling barring her from election

French far-right politician Marine Le Pen has been barred from standing for office for five years with immediate effect after being convicted of embezzling EU funds. The ruling is likely to rule her out of the 2027 presidential race.
Le Pen was accused of misappropriating money intended for European Union parliamentary aides to finance her party’s activities when she was a member of European Parliament between 2004 and 2016.
A court in Paris on Monday gave her a five-year ban on running for public office and a four-year prison sentence, two years of which are suspended.
The former head of the National Rally party is widely viewed as the frontrunner for the 2027 presidential election. She needs to have Monday’s ruling overturned by a higher court in order to revive her chance of running in the election.
Le Pen later said on a local TV program that the ruling was a political decision to prevent her from being elected president, and said she was going to appeal because she is innocent.
But French newspaper Le Monde said, “the fact that such cases are often met with particularly long delays makes it uncertain that an appeals trial could be held before the 2027 presidential election.”
National Rally President Jordan Bardella wrote on social media, “Today it is not only Marine Le Pen who was unjustly condemned: It was French democracy that was killed.”

フランスの極右政治家マリーヌ・ル・ペン氏は、EU資金を横領したとして有罪判決を受け、即日、公職への立候補を5年間禁止されました。この判決により、彼女は2027年の大統領選から排除される可能性が高くなりました。
ル・ペン氏は、2004年から2016年の間、欧州議会議員だった際、欧州連合（EU）の議会補佐官向けの資金を自身の政党活動に流用したとして告発されていました。
パリの裁判所は月曜日、彼女に対して公職への立候補禁止5年と**懲役4年（うち2年は執行猶予）**の判決を下しました。
国民連合党の元党首である彼女は、2027年大統領選の最有力候補と見られています。彼女が選挙に再び出馬するには、今回の判決を上級裁判所で覆す必要があります。
その後、ル・ペン氏は地元テレビ番組で、「この判決は、私の大統領当選を阻止するための政治的判断だ」と主張し、「私は無実なので控訴するつもりだ」と語りました。
しかし、仏紙「ル・モンド」は、「このような案件は裁判までに長期間を要することが多く、2027年の大統領選までに控訴審が開かれるかどうかは不透明である」と報じました。
国民連合党のジョルダン・バルデラ党首はSNSで、「今日、有罪判決を受けたのはル・ペン氏だけではない。殺されたのはフランスの民主主義だ」と投稿しました。
