US government enters a partial shutdown

The US government partially shut down early Wednesday after lawmakers failed to agree on a stopgap funding bill. It is the first such stoppage since a halt that began in December 2018.
The Republican party, led by President Donald Trump, failed to gather the 60 votes necessary to pass a budget in the US Senate. Opposition party Democrats said they would not vote for the measure unless cuts to healthcare subsidies were eliminated.
Both parties have accused each other of causing the shutdown.
Speaking to reporters before the midnight deadline on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer laid the blame on Trump for slashing federal services and government jobs. Any cuts would extend a push begun earlier this year with billionaire Elon Musk, who had worked with the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.
Schumer said: “They’ve already cut 300,000 people, whether it’s a shutdown or not, it’ll be up to Trump, whether he’s going to let Musk — formally DOGE — vote to do these cuts, do these layoffs and do these firings.” Schumer said it will fall on president Trump as “he’s the one doing the firings, not Democrats and that’s what it shows.”
The Congressional Budget Office estimates around 750,000 federal workers could be furloughed for as long as the shutdown lasts.
Government workers performing services deemed essential, including those related to national defense, law and order and healthcare will continue. But if the stoppage stretches on, national parks and tourist sites may have to close, and airports across the country could be impacted.
Last time around, the government shut down after lawmakers clashed over Trump’s efforts to fund a border wall with Mexico.
The halt spanned 35 days and was the longest federal shutdown in US history.
