(Yes, the word “Affordability.” It’s hard to translate directly, but I think it means a sense of fair pricing, affordable prices, and also one’s standard of living.)
(Originally, this word was used by the opposition Democratic Party to say that President Trump’s policies, such as tariffs, were causing prices to rise and the standard of living to deteriorate. They used “affordability” to ask what he was going to do about it. But it became a topic because President Trump himself went out of his way to say, “That ‘affordability’ thing is a hoax. It’s a fabrication.”)
(In Japan as well, I think there are many voices saying that prices are rising and they want their take-home pay to increase, so in that sense, it’s something that resonates with Japanese people too.)

もともとは野党・民主党が、関税などトランプ大統領の政策によって物価が上昇し、生活水準が悪化しているとして、「それをどうするのか」と問いかける際に使った言葉でした。しかし話題になったのは、トランプ大統領自身がわざわざ「その“affordability”というものはデマだ。捏造だ」と言ったからです。

50年前、私が小学生だった頃、NHKのニュースで「アメリカが建国200周年を迎えた」と伝えつつ、「転換点にある」と語っていました。当時はニクソン大統領が辞任し、フォード大統領の時代で、無名だったカーターが台頭した選挙の年でした。
同じ言葉を来年も耳にするかもしれません。アメリカは一連の転換点に直面しているのです。
