Iran anti-government protests stoke tension

Protests over economic hardships have spread across Iran, raising tensions within the country.
Since last month, demonstrators have been complaining of soaring prices due partly to Western economic sanctions. Some called for more protests Friday.
Reuters news agency reported that such disturbances have spread to all of Iran’s 31 provinces.
The Tasnim News Agency, which is linked to the government’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that 11 people have so far been killed in clashes between protestors and security forces. But a US-based human rights group said the death toll has reached 42. Another human rights group based in Norway said 45 people have been killed.
Iran’s state-run broadcaster said on Friday that protestors set fire to cars, buses and fire engines, causing casualties. It also said damage is intensifying “because of the presence of some terrorists funded by US and Zionist Regime.”
Demonstrators were seen taking to the streets in an area near the NHK office in Tehran around 8 p.m. on Thursday. Some of them appeared to be calling for a change in the country’s Islamic government, with some chanting, “Death to the dictator.” Demonstrators said security authorities were responding by launching tear-gas bombs against them.
Reuters and other media outlets reported that the country is suffering internet blackouts in wide areas.

先月以降、デモ参加者たちは、欧米による経済制裁が一因となっている物価の急騰に不満を訴えてきた。金曜日には、さらなる抗議行動を呼びかける声も上がった。
ロイター通信は、こうした騒乱がイランの31州すべてに広がっていると報じた。
政府のイスラム革命防衛隊と関係のあるタスニム通信は、デモ参加者と治安部隊の衝突により、これまでに11人が死亡したと伝えた。しかし、アメリカに拠点を置く人権団体は死者数が42人に達したとし、ノルウェーに拠点を置く別の人権団体は45人が死亡したと述べている。
イランの国営放送は金曜日、デモ参加者が車やバス、消防車に放火し、死傷者が出たと伝えた。また、「アメリカとシオニスト政権に資金提供された一部のテロリストの存在」により、被害が激化しているとも述べた。
木曜日午後8時ごろ、テヘランのNHK支局近くで、通りに出て抗議する人々の姿が確認された。中には、「独裁者に死を」と唱え、イスラム政権の変革を求める人もいた。デモ参加者によると、治安当局は催涙ガス弾を発射して対応したという。
