LONDON (Mainichi) — Sumo wrestlers Onosato and Hoshoryu went sightseeing in London on Oct. 14, before the Grand Sumo Tournament started there. They visited famous places like Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. People in London were excited to see the big wrestlers in kimono, and many took photos and videos.
Hoshoryu bought a hot dog from a street vendor and said, “Delicious!” He shared it with Onosato. Hoshoryu also said, “London is a nice place. I’d like to go inside the Houses of Parliament.”
A 24-year-old woman took a photo with Hoshoryu. She said it was her first time seeing a sumo wrestler and was amazed at how big and strong he looked. She said she loves Japanese culture and wants to visit Japan someday.
The sumo tournament was at the Royal Albert Hall from Oct. 15 to 19. The sumo ring was made with special soil from around the U.K. Some toilets were made stronger for the wrestlers. The hall will give out rice balls, miso soup, ramen, rice, and soy sauce for the wrestlers’ snacks.
This was the first sumo event in London in 34 years. The matches will be shown live on TV, and the tickets sold well.
