Venezuelan President Maduro transferred to detention center in New York

US President Donald Trump’s administration has sent Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro to New York after carrying out a military operation in the South American country to capture him.
Multiple US media reports said Maduro arrived at a federal detention center in Brooklyn on Saturday.
The military strike involved more than 150 aircraft from 20 bases, ships and elsewhere to detain the Venezuelan president and his wife. The couple was flown by helicopter to a US Navy amphibious assault ship and then transferred by airplane to New York.
The New York Times cited a senior Venezuelan official as saying that the US strike had left at least 40 people dead, including civilians.
Trump said Maduro and his wife have been indicted in New York for drug-trafficking and other charges, and suggested that they will stand trial in the US.
US media outlets reported that the Venezuelan president is likely to appear at a federal district court in Manhattan as early as Monday.
Trump justified the operation at a news conference, saying it was carried out to bring “outlaw dictator” Maduro to justice.
He said the US is going to “run” Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” is ensured.
Trump also said Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez will assume the presidency.
Rodriguez held an emergency meeting with Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino and others.
She said the only president of Venezuela is Maduro, and that the country will never again become a colony of any empire.
Rodriguez issued a call for unity to the Venezuelan people.
The United Nations Security Council has decided to convene an emergency meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed serious concern over the failure to respect the rules of international law.
