Japanese convenience store chain Lawson says it will establish 100 shops nationwide by fiscal 2030 that can be used as disaster response hubs.
The company announced the plan on Wednesday, citing the need to prepare for large-scale disasters such as an anticipated massive earthquake in the Nankai Trough off Japan’s Pacific coast.
Lawson said the designated stores will be equipped to continue operating by installing solar panels on their roofs and receiving power supplies from the company’s electric vehicles. Local residents will be able to charge their smartphones there.
The stores will also use Starlink satellite internet services to secure emergency communication measures.
The firm said its store in Futtsu City in Chiba Prefecture will begin operating with such equipment within this fiscal year and conduct disaster drills.
Lawson President and CEO Takemasu Sadanobu said that he believes many people will head to convenience stores first during a disaster.
Takemasu said that by meeting the expectations of community residents, the firm aims to create a society where everyone can live with peace of mind.
Moves to develop store networks as disaster response hubs are spreading in Japan.
Meanwhile, convenience store chain FamilyMart will begin a trial program in the Noto region in Ishikawa Prefecture, along with other firms involving NTT Docomo, using sales vehicles equipped with satellite communication capabilities.
