Senior United Nations officials say the world body will cut about a quarter of its peacekeepers. This comes amid the United States being in arrears in paying its share of contributions under President Donald Trump’s administration.
The officials told reporters on Wednesday that the UN plans to take contingency measures to reduce 15 percent of the peacekeeping force’s budget. They said 13,000 to 14,000 peacekeepers will be returned to their home countries or laid off.
The officials said the reductions will have a significant impact on peacekeeping operations and the ability to fulfill mandates. They underscored that the UN will call on countries, including the US, to pay their share of contributions.
Each UN member state is legally obligated to pay its portion toward peacekeeping, with the US responsible for more than 26 percent of the budget.
UN peacekeepers are working mainly in the Middle East and Africa, engaging in missions such as monitoring a ceasefire and protecting civilians.
