Flu cases in Japan more than double week-on-week

Influenza case counts in Japan in the week until Sunday were more than double the figure from the previous week.
The Japan Institute for Health Security and others say about 3,000 medical institutions nationwide reported 57,424 cases. That’s 2.4 times the figure of the week before.
The number of patients per institution stood at 14.9, up 8.61 week-on-week. This is the first time this season that the figure has topped 10.
Japan’s health ministry says the case counts exceeded 10 six weeks earlier than the last flu season when a major outbreak hit the country.
But the ministry cautions that simple comparisons cannot be made because the number of institutions that report case counts was cut from around 5,000 from April.
Miyagi Prefecture has the largest number of patients per institution at 28.58.
The number also exceeded 20 in Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Hokkaido, Okinawa and Tokyo.
Case counts increased week-on-week in all 47 prefectures.
The health ministry is urging people to take precautions, such as washing hands and wearing masks, and to consider getting vaccinated.
