US to resume student visa interviews, tighten social media vetting

The administration of US President Donald Trump is set to resume accepting student visa applications, while stepping up scrutiny of applicants’ social media posts.
Last month, the Trump administration temporarily halted new interview appointments for people applying for visas to study in the United States.
A senior US State Department official told reporters on Wednesday that applicants will again be able to make interview appointments.
The official said, “Under new guidance, consular officers will conduct a comprehensive and thorough vetting,” and all applicants will be asked to adjust the privacy settings on all their social media profiles to “public.”
US media say the department told embassies and consulates that visa applicants must be vetted to identify people who “bear hostile attitudes toward our citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles.”
The department will also be looking for people who “advocate for, aid, or support designated terrorists and other threats to US national security,” or “perpetrate unlawful antisemitic harassment or violence.”
Media reports say the new vetting will be implemented within five business days.
The Trump administration has been raising the bar on foreign students’ enrollment in US universities.
It banned Harvard University from enrolling foreign students for allegedly fostering violence and antisemitism on campus.

ドナルド・トランプ米大統領の政権は、学生ビザ申請の受け付けを再開する一方で、申請者のSNS投稿の精査を強化する方針を示しました。
先月、トランプ政権は米国での留学ビザの面接予約の新規受付を一時停止していました。
米国務省の上級幹部は水曜日、申請者が再び面接予約を行えるようになると述べました。
その幹部は「新たなガイダンスの下で、領事官は包括的かつ徹底的な審査を行う」と説明し、すべての申請者に対してSNSのプライバシー設定を「公開」に変更するよう求めるとしました。
米メディアによると、同省は大使館や領事館に対し、
「米国の市民、文化、政府、機関、建国の理念に敵対的態度を持つ人々」を特定するための審査を行うよう通達したとのことです。
さらに「指定テロリストや米国の国家安全保障に対するその他の脅威を支持・援助・助長する人々」、
あるいは「違法な反ユダヤ主義的嫌がらせや暴力を行う人々」についても調査対象にするとのことです。
報道によれば、この新しい審査体制は5営業日以内に実施される予定です。
トランプ政権は米国の大学における外国人学生の受け入れ基準を引き上げており、
ハーバード大学についても、暴力や反ユダヤ主義を助長しているとして外国人学生の入学を禁止しました。
