World’s largest manga fan fest Comic Market celebrates 50th year

S/ Suzuki Kiwamu, NTV Reporter / The Comic Market celebrating its 50th anniversary is underway. The venue is lively with many participants.
The Comic Market’s two-day summer event began on August 16 at Tokyo Big Sight.
Also known as Comiket, the world’s largest fan festival for manga, anime and other genres features the sale of noncommercial, self-published comics by professional and amateur creators.
Comiket, held in the summer and the winter each year, also attracts cosplayers who dress as their favorite characters.

Comiket was launched in 1975 and has grown to become a representative of large-scale events over the past half century.
It has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest comics festival, with about 750,000 people taking part in the three-day Comiket in the summer of 2019.

Comiket aims to serve as a place to expand the possibilities of expression.
Organizers said they expect more than 200,000 people to participate in the two-day event through August 17.

毎年夏と冬に開催されるコミケは、お気に入りのキャラクターに扮したコスプレイヤーも引きつけている。
参加者は「楽しい。夏のコミケが好きだ」と話す。
別の参加者は「暑いけれど、このキャラクターへの愛が何よりも優先される」と語った。
コミケは1975年に始まり、過去半世紀にわたり大規模イベントの代表的存在へと成長してきた。
2019年夏の3日間のコミケには約75万人が参加し、世界最大のコミックフェスティバルとしてギネス世界記録に認定された。
共同代表の市川浩一氏は「50年間続いてきたことに非常に感動している。さまざまな企画やグッズを考えている」と述べた。
コミケは表現の可能性を広げる場となることを目指している。
主催者によると、8月17日までの2日間で20万人以上の来場を見込んでいるという。
