Zohran Mamdani from the Democratic Party has become the mayor of New York City. At his inauguration ceremony on Thursday, the 34-year-old vowed to improve the lives of New York residents.
Mamdani delivered his speech at City Hall before supporters and politicians from the Democratic Party’s left wing, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Mamdani said, “No longer will City Hall hesitate to use its power to improve New Yorkers’ lives.” He said, “City Hall will deliver an agenda of safety, affordability and abundance.”
Mamdani was born in Uganda. He is the first Muslim mayor of the city.
During the election campaign, he advocated left-wing policies. He gained support especially from low-income and young voters by promising to support people who are suffering from high prices. He pledged to implement measures to make housing more affordable as well as to introduce free childcare and free buses.
The new mayor has said he will finance his policies by raising taxes on businesses and the wealthy. But observers say some of his proposed measures will require approval from the state legislature among others.
Observers say rivalry between leftists and moderates within the Democratic Party on a national level is expected to intensify as it formulates its policies. They say there could be an impact on the strategies of the Republican and Democratic parties for the midterm elections later this year.
