A female second-year student at Doshisha University (20 years old) said with a smile, “Ever since I started Kyudo, it has been my goal to stand here. I drew my bow with gratitude to my family and friends who have supported me up until now.”

江戸時代には、武士たちが三十三間堂の軒下で、誰が最も多く矢を射られるかを競っていたと言われている。現在は、京都府弓道連盟と妙法院（京都市東山区）が「三十三間堂全国弓道大会」を主催している。今年で76回目を迎えたこの大会には、男女あわせて約1,900人が参加した。
参加者たちは色鮮やかな振袖や袴姿で一列に並び、ひと息ついてから、60メートル先に設置された直径1メートルの的を狙った。冷たい冬の空気を切り裂く矢の鋭い音が、堂内に響き渡った。
同志社大学の2年生の女子学生（20歳）は笑顔で、「弓道を始めてから、ここに立つことが目標でした。これまで支えてくれた家族や友人への感謝の気持ちを込めて弓を引きました」と語った。
