New Adults Gather in Kyoto to Showcase Archery Skills
KYOTO, Jan 12 (News On Japan) – At Kyoto’s Sanjusangendo, newly recognized 20-year-old adults gathered to demonstrate their archery skills during the annual “Toshiya” event.
The tradition is believed to have begun in the Kamakura period, when samurai competed by shooting arrows under the temple’s eaves, aiming to hit as many targets as possible within a day. Today, it has evolved into a national archery competition.
Participants, dressed in vibrant traditional attire, shot arrows with determination toward a target located 60 meters away.
One participant said: “I drew the bow with the spirit of forging my own future.”
Another expressed gratitude: “I am truly thankful to my parents, who wholeheartedly support my archery practice.”
This year, approximately 1,600 people took part, each renewing their personal resolve for the future.

京都の三十三間堂では、新たに20歳として認められた若者たちが、毎年恒例の「通し矢」の行事で弓の腕前を披露するために集まった。
この伝統は、鎌倉時代に始まったと考えられており、当時は武士たちが寺の軒下で矢を放ち、1日のうちにどれだけ多くの的に当てられるかを競っていた。現在では、全国規模の弓道大会へと発展している。
参加者たちは色鮮やかな伝統衣装に身を包み、60メートル先に設置された的に向かって、強い決意をもって矢を放った。
ある参加者は、「自分の未来を切り開くという気持ちで弓を引きました」と語った。
別の参加者は感謝の思いを述べ、「弓道の練習を心から支えてくれる両親に、本当に感謝しています」と話した。
今年は約1,600人が参加し、それぞれが未来に向けて新たな決意を胸に刻んだ。
