Louvre Museum reopens after multimillion dollar heist

The Louvre Museum in Paris has reopened to visitors after millions of dollars’ worth of jewelry was stolen three days ago.
Multiple thieves broke into the French museum on Sunday and made off with precious jewels that were on display, including pieces from Napoleon’s collection. The total value is reported to be about 102 million dollars.
The museum reopened on Wednesday, drawing crowds from early morning.
The AFP news agency says the Apollo Gallery, where the theft occurred, remains closed to the public.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez told reporters that an investigation is progressing. He said more than one hundred investigators had been mobilized and he is fully confident they will find the perpetrators.
“The financial damage bears no comparison to the historical loss.”
A prosecutor on the case said the financial damage was based on an assessment by the museum’s curator. She said the cost bore no comparison to the historical loss.
Among items stolen were a tiara and necklace from Napoleon’s imperial collection. The lightning raid was reportedly completed in just seven minutes.
Investigators are searching for four people who may have been involved in the heist. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
The suspects are thought to have had help. The prosecutor suggested they received assistance from “a whole bunch of teams.”
In response to criticisms of the museum’s security, Culture Minister Rachida Dati insisted to parliament on Tuesday that the museum’s “security apparatus did not fail.”
