A Christmas tree has been lit in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Many people gathered for the lighting ceremony on Friday and reflected on peace.
A Christmas tree has been installed each year around this time in the square in front of St. Sophia Cathedral since the Russian invasion began. This year’s tree, measuring about 18 meters, is the tallest so far.
Stalls set up near the tree sold hot drinks and snacks. As the mercury dropped to around 5 degrees Celsius, visitors warmed themselves with hot chocolate and took photos with the tree in the background.
A 26-year-old woman living in the city, who has a friend fighting on the front lines, said that although the war is continuing, the Christmas tree makes her feel bright and warm. She added that she wishes peace for all Ukrainians.
A 38-year-old mother, who came from the eastern region of Kharkiv with her son, said the tree is a small joy. She also said that Ukrainians really want to return to the life they had, which was taken away by Russia.
