NEW YORK (Kyodo) — U.S. firm iRobot Corp., known for its Roomba robot vacuum that has sold 50 million units, said Sunday that it has filed for bankruptcy protection, after a slump in performance amid competition from low-cost Chinese products.
The company will continue operations during the bankruptcy proceedings, while a Chinese manufacturer that handles its production is set to acquire all of its shares to rebuild iRobot’s business. The process is expected to be completed by February 2026.
The U.S. firm filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code with a court in the state of Delaware. It said it will strengthen its finances by reducing debt while continuing to develop robot vacuums and smart home technologies.
The company’s Japanese subsidiary, iRobot Japan G.K., said there will be no direct impact on consumers in the Asian country, adding that after-sales services such as repairs and customer support will continue as usual.
Roomba, launched in 2002, is a representative disk-shaped robotic cleaner that has helped ease the burden of household chores.
