Olympic medal won by Ukrainian athlete returned by Japanese buyer
Monday, April 6, 13:10
A bronze medal won by a Ukrainian karate athlete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has been returned by the Japanese person who bought it at an auction.
Stanislav Horuna put the medal up for auction in 2022. He had won it in the men’s karate kumite in the under 75-kilogram class. But he decided to sell it to support his country amid Russia’s invasion.
The medal was purchased for 20,500 dollars by a Japanese bidder with links to a karate club in Tokyo.
The buyer initially planned to return it to Horuna once the fighting ends, and peace is restored to Ukraine. But with Russia’s invasion still ongoing, the bidder decided to return it earlier to express the hope for peace.
A child from the karate club put the medal around Horuna’s neck on Sunday during a handover ceremony at the training room.
To express his appreciation, Horuna later taught karate to children, demonstrating his skills and giving them step-by-step instructions in his signature techniques.
Horuna said he was glad to realize there are people who support him. He said he wants to show the medal to his son, and encourage him to have big dreams.
