The Wall Street Journal has reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has declared a “code red” to urge employees to improve its generative artificial intelligence product, ChatGPT.
The US newspaper said Altman sent staff a memo on Monday, instructing them to delay development of other products to focus on improving the quality of ChatGPT.
He specifically called for increasing the chatbot’s speed and reliability, and enabling it to answer a wider range of questions.
A senior OpenAI official wrote in a social media post on X, “Our focus now is to keep making ChatGPT more capable, continue growing, and expand access around the world — while making it feel even more intuitive and personal.”
Competition in generative AI development has been intensifying since ChatGPT was released three years ago.
Last month, IT giant Google released Gemini 3, a new version of its AI model, and startup Anthropic is also speeding up development.
