Japanese publishers, creators issue call to address AI copyright infringement

Major publishing houses and creators’ associations in Japan have issued a joint statement calling on US tech company OpenAI to address copyright infringement, citing pictures and videos thought to be created by its Sora 2 generative artificial intelligence model.
Sora 2 has raised concerns after many videos featuring Japanese anime and game characters were created through the model and posted online.
In the statement, a total of 19 groups, including publishers and the Japan Cartoonists Association, confirm that they hold the principle of not tolerating copyright infringement.
They make a strong request to AI-related firms to gain the necessary consent from copyright holders and to take other measures.
Other demands include ensuring the transparency of data learned and awarding appropriate compensation to right holders.
The statement says the current system, in which copyright holders need to opt out of having their work appear in content, leads to the violation of rights.
The statement adds that the need for AI-related firms to follow through the practice of gaining consent should be reiterated.
Last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he plans to introduce a new feature to strengthen the power of copyright holders, which will enable them to impose detailed restrictions on how their characters are used.
