Japan stockpiled rice sales expand to all 47 prefectures
Japan’s agriculture ministry says that sales of stockpiled rice will widen to stores across the country on Friday.
The ministry said on Thursday that sales of the grain had begun at 3,731 retailers in all but one prefecture. The rice was distributed through no-bid contracts.
It also said that some of the rice would be available in Okinawa Prefecture as early as Friday.
Some shops are still waiting for the grain to arrive and others sold out soon after sales began at retailers including supermarkets and convenience stores.
Agriculture Minister Koizumi Shinjiro on Thursday unveiled a plan to bring the auction of imported rice forward to this month to help ensure a steady supply after soaring prices hit consumers.
Koizumi said that the first bidding will take place on June 27 for 30,000 tons out of the 100,000 tons of imported table rice set for auction. The grain is expected to arrive in Japan in September.
