China reports lowest birthrate since 1949

China’s birthrate fell to its lowest level last year since modern records began in 1949 as the population declined for a fourth straight year.
China’s National Bureau of Statistics announced on Monday that the population of the Chinese mainland was estimated at about 1.405 billion as of the end of last year. That’s down by about 3.39 million from a year earlier.
The number of people aged 65 and over reached 223.65 million in 2025. They accounted for 15.9 percent of the total population.
The number of births totaled 7.92 million, down 1.62 million from the previous year. Chinese media reported that this was even lower than the previous record of 9.02 million marked in 2023.
China is facing social problems, such as a labor shortage caused by a rapidly aging population and the declining birthrate.
The country abolished its one-child policy in 2016, and couples are now allowed to have up to three children.
Last year, the government introduced a childcare subsidy program to help reverse the falling birthrate. It offers families 3,600 yuan, or about 500 dollars, per year for each child under the age of three. Some local governments have initiated their own subsidy programs.
But it is uncertain whether such measures will be effective amid the economic slowdown and rising education costs. The attitudes of younger generations toward marriage and childbirth are also changing.
