NASA says it will invest 20 billion dollars over the next seven years to build a base on the Moon, while pausing plans for a new space station.
Agency head Jared Isaacman outlined the updated strategy for the US-led Artemis program at a news conference on Tuesday ahead of the launch of a large rocket scheduled for April 1 or later. The rocket will carry four astronauts on a flyby mission — NASA’s first crewed trip to the Moon since Apollo more than 50 years ago.
The mission is part of NASA’s goal to land humans on the Moon in 2028. Isaacman said the agency will then shift its focus to constructing a lunar base, putting work on the planned Gateway station on hold.
The Gateway is intended as a staging point for transporting astronauts and supplies, with Japan set to provide life-support systems. But Isaacman indicated NASA is prioritizing infrastructure directly supporting long-term presence on the lunar surface.
He said the aim this time is not just to leave “flags and footprints,” but to stay on the Moon, adding that the agency is now focused on systems that enable sustained operations.
The policy shift comes amid intensifying competition between the United States and China in lunar exploration.
