Artemis II sets record for farthest human journey from Earth

Astronauts on the US-led Artemis II mission have reached the farthest distance from Earth ever traveled by humans, as their spacecraft flew over the far side of the moon.
The Orion capsule carrying the four astronauts entered the moon’s gravitational sphere of influence on the fifth day of the mission.
It flew around the far side of the moon the day after. US space agency NASA says the crew set a record for the farthest distance from Earth at 23:02 UTC Monday.
NASA says the spacecraft reached more than 406,700 kilometers from Earth, surpassing a record set by Apollo 13 in 1970 by about 6,600 kilometers.
Before setting the new record, the Orion made its closest lunar approach, giving astronauts a chance to take photos and videos of the moon’s far side from above.
Because a communications blackout with Earth was expected while flying over the far side of the moon, applause broke out in NASA’s Mission Control when contact was restored.
The latest mission is the first crewed test flight under the US-led Artemis program, which aims to land astronauts on the moon in 2028.
Artemis II is due to return to Earth on Friday with a splashdown off the US coast.
