Japan to deploy surface-to-ship missile system on easternmost remote island

NHK has learned that Japan’s Defense Ministry plans to deploy, for the first time, a surface-to-ship missile system on Minamitorishima Island in the Pacific as early as June this year.
The ministry plans to build a firing range on the island for the Ground Self-Defense Force’s Type-12 surface-to-ship missiles.
Firing drills are set to begin in or after fiscal 2027.
The missiles have a range of over 100 kilometers. The deployment would consist of a launcher, mid-sized drones used to pinpoint targets, and a system to gather and analyze radio waves emitted by vessels.
The projectiles themselves would not be brought to the island. The ministry plans to use the equipment to confirm whether the missiles would function normally on the island.
Minamitorishima is located about 2,000 kilometers southeast of Japan’s main island of Honshu. It is part of Tokyo’s Ogasawara island chain.
Maritime Self-Defense Force personnel and Japan Meteorological Agency workers are stationed there, but there are no residents.
Japan has been stepping up defenses on the Pacific side since two Chinese Navy aircraft carriers simultaneously sailed into the Pacific for the first time last June.

NHKは、防衛省が今年6月にも、太平洋の南鳥島に地対艦ミサイルシステムを初めて配備する計画であることを把握しました。
同省は、陸上自衛隊の12式地対艦ミサイルのための射撃場を島に建設する予定です。射撃訓練は2027年度以降に開始される見込みです。
このミサイルの射程は100キロメートル以上です。配備には発射装置、目標を特定するための中型ドローン、そして船舶から発せられる電波を収集・分析するシステムが含まれます。
ミサイル本体は島に持ち込まれません。装備が島で正常に機能するかどうかを確認するために使用される予定です。
南鳥島は本州の南東約2000キロメートルに位置し、東京都の小笠原諸島の一部です。海上自衛隊の隊員や気象庁の職員が駐在していますが、一般の居住者はいません。
