The United States and Israel have launched military strikes against Iran in what they say is a bid to keep Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps says Iran has launched its first wave of retaliatory missile and drone attacks toward Israel.
US President Donald Trump announced in a video on social media that the US military has begun major combat operations in Iran.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also released a video in which he said Israel and the United States have embarked on an operation to remove what he called the existential threat posed by Iran. He said the country must not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
Israeli media are quoting security sources as saying the US and Israel jointly planned the attack for months and that the initial phase is expected to last for four days.
Reuters news agency quotes Iran’s Tasnim news agency as saying seven missiles hit an area near the presidential palace and the compound of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian state media reported three explosions in the capital Tehran on Saturday and at least two more about 30 minutes later.
Iranian media have quoted officials in the southern province of Hormozgan on the Persian Gulf as saying that an elementary school was bombed in an Israeli attack, and that at least 50 people including children had been killed.
The Israeli military has released footage of what it says are attacks on hundreds of targets, including missile launch facilities, in western Iran.
Israel says Iran has launched multiple missiles toward Israel, while the country’s defense minister has declared a special state of emergency covering the whole country.
